IKEA cabinets don't install like traditional American cabinets. They hang on a metal suspension rail system that has to be dead-level and anchored into studs before a single cabinet goes up. Get the rail wrong by a quarter inch and every door, drawer, and countertop downstream inherits the error.

Joe Runkle Construction has installed IKEA cabinetry — and only IKEA cabinetry — for over 15 years across San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, and Palm Springs. Assembly and installation starts at $75 per cabinet. Licensed, insured, and bonded, with Joe himself on every job.

Why IKEA Cabinets Install Differently

Done right, the rail system is brilliant — it carries the weight into the studs, makes fine adjustments easy, and produces the seamless, built-in look IKEA kitchens are known for.

Done wrong, it's unforgiving. A rail that's off-level, under-anchored, or run through the wrong wall section compounds its mistake into every cabinet that hangs on it. Most installation failures we're called to fix trace back to the rail, not the boxes. This is why a general handyman who's great with traditional cabinets can still struggle with an IKEA kitchen.

Precision Installation & Alignment

Southern California houses are rarely square. Walls bow, floors slope, corners drift from ninety degrees — and IKEA's system assumes none of that.

Bridging the gap between a modular European cabinet system and a real-world wall is the craft of this trade. We scribe filler panels to wavy walls, level base cabinets across sloping floors, and plan around plumbing and electrical so everything lands where it should.

Then comes the detail work that separates a professional install from a decent one: door gaps even to the millimeter, drawer fronts in a perfect grid, soft-close hardware adjusted so every cabinet closes with the same quiet click. That's the finish line we work to on every job.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are IKEA cabinets mounted differently from regular cabinets?

Traditional cabinets screw directly to the wall through the cabinet back. IKEA's SEKTION system uses a steel suspension rail: the rail is leveled and anchored into wall studs first, then the cabinets hang from it and lock in place. The rail carries the load and allows fine side-to-side and height adjustment — but it also means the entire kitchen's accuracy depends on that one rail being installed perfectly.

Why should I hire an IKEA specialist instead of a general contractor or handyman?

Because the skills don't fully transfer. An installer who's hung traditional cabinets for years has habits — screwing through cabinet backs, shimming box by box — that work against the rail system. A specialist knows SEKTION's quirks: where the rail can and can't be cut, how to handle a stud that lands in the wrong spot, which fillers and panels the design will need, and how to fix the out-of-square assembly mistakes DIYers make. Joe has spent 15+ years on IKEA systems exclusively. That focus is the whole business.

Can IKEA cabinets be installed on uneven walls or floors?

Yes — that's most of the job in older Southern California homes. The suspension rail gets shimmed and leveled independently of the wavy wall behind it, base cabinets are leveled on adjustable legs across sloping floors, and filler panels are scribed to follow the wall's actual contour. The system handles imperfect rooms well, but only when the installer plans for it from the start.

Do you assemble the cabinets too, or just install them?

Both, and we strongly recommend keeping them together. Assembly quality directly determines installation quality — a box that's glued, squared, and fitted with the right suspension hardware hangs cleanly; a rushed one fights the rail forever. Our per cabinet rate covers assembly and installation as one job.

Will IKEA cabinets hold heavy countertops like quartz or granite?

Yes, when installed correctly. SEKTION base cabinets on properly adjusted legs, anchored and leveled as a unit, support stone countertops in kitchens every day. What matters is a flat, level, rigid cabinet run before the stone template is made — fabricators will tell you a bad cabinet install is the number one cause of countertop problems.
